Why only the modem matters
The modem is the box Xfinity's network talks to, so Xfinity maintains a list of models it has approved for its network. The router only receives the connection over Ethernet, so any router works. That is why the shortlist above is about modems, and the router recommendation below is about speed and coverage.
Choose the router
Match the router's WAN port to the modem. For plans up to about 1 Gbps, a 2.5GbE WAN port leaves headroom, like the TP-Link Archer BE550. For 2 Gbps and faster, use a router with a 10GbE port, like the Archer BE800. For a larger home, mesh coverage matters more than headline speed. More options are in the best Wi-Fi 7 router for Xfinity guide.
Before you buy
- Look up the exact model, including any v2 or v3 revision, in Xfinity's My Device Info tool, which needs your account.
- Check the modem's Xfinity-rated speed against your plan, not only the compatibility badge.
- Buy new from a reputable seller. Xfinity recommends new devices over used ones for reliability and support.
- Cancel or return the rented gateway after the new modem is activated, so you stop paying the equipment fee.
Questions people ask
Can I use my own router with Xfinity?
Yes. On Xfinity cable internet you can connect your own router behind a compatible modem, or behind Xfinity's gateway if you put the gateway in bridge mode. The router does not need to be on any approved list; the modem does.
Do I need both a modem and a router?
Yes, unless you rent Xfinity's gateway, which combines the two. The modem connects to the coax cable and carries your plan's speed. The router builds your Wi-Fi network. Owning them separately lets you upgrade the router later without touching the modem.
Does every modem on Xfinity's list support every plan speed?
No. Xfinity publishes a maximum wired download speed for each model. A modem rated near 950 Mbps cannot deliver a 2 Gbps plan, so match the rating to your plan, not just the compatibility badge.
Which modems work with Xfinity Voice home phone?
Only models flagged as voice-enabled on Xfinity's list. In our shortlist those are the ARRIS SURFboard T25 and the NETGEAR CM2050V. A standard data-only modem will not carry home phone service.
Is it cheaper to buy my own modem and router?
Compare the equipment fee on your Xfinity bill with the purchase price of a modem plus router. Fees and promotions change, so we do not quote a number here. Buying only makes sense if you keep the service long enough to pay the hardware back.
